Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start, defeating Sunderland 5-3 in an eight-goal Etihad thriller.
Antoine Semenyo scored twice, while Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland also found the net as City survived a spirited Sunderland fightback led by Brian Brobbey’s hat-trick.
Fernández opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a free kick, but Brobbey quickly equalised for Sunderland. Cherki restored City’s lead in the 29th minute before Brobbey struck again four minutes later to make it 2-2.
Semenyo put City ahead for a third time shortly before half-time and doubled the advantage in the 57th minute. Brobbey completed his hat-trick two minutes later, leaving Sunderland within one goal of an equaliser before Haaland settled the match with a late finish in the 81st minute.
The victory gives Manchester City five wins from five league matches and a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League heading into the international break. The result also marked Enzo Maresca’s fifth successive league victory since taking charge of City.
