No. 1 Texas held off No. 14 Tennessee 20-17 as Colin Simmons tied a school record with five sacks Saturday.

No. 1 Texas survived a late comeback attempt from No. 14 Tennessee to win 20-17 Saturday in Knoxville, opening Southeastern Conference play with a dramatic road victory. The Longhorns improved to 4-0 after building a lead and then relying on their defense to withstand a frantic finish at Neyland Stadium.
Colin Simmons was the centerpiece of Texas’ defensive performance, tying the program record with five sacks. Texas finished with 10 sacks overall, repeatedly putting pressure on Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon and helping the Longhorns overcome a difficult offensive afternoon. Quarterback Arch Manning threw for 201 yards, was sacked six times and was intercepted once.
Texas running back Raleek Brown supplied the decisive points, rushing for two touchdowns. His four-yard touchdown run with 5:41 remaining gave Texas a 20-10 lead, but Tennessee refused to go quietly. Brandon later connected with Mike Matthews for a 30-yard touchdown with 1:22 left, cutting the deficit to three points.
Tennessee recovered the ensuing onside kick, giving the Volunteers one final opportunity. Texas’ Jelani McDonald ended the threat by breaking up Brandon’s final pass in the end zone, allowing the Longhorns to escape with the victory.
Texas also had to overcome its own mistakes. The Longhorns committed 11 penalties for 115 yards, while Tennessee’s Qua Moss returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown. Simmons also received an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty following a sack, wiping out a play that would have left Tennessee facing a difficult fourth down.
Despite those errors, Texas’ defense produced enough big plays to preserve the win. Tennessee fell to 3-1, while Texas moves forward at 4-0 after adding another significant victory to its unbeaten start.
