Mother, Teen Daughter Killed, Home Set Ablaze in Malick, Barataria

A mother and her 17-year-old daughter were killed at their Malick home Friday. Police are investigating the deaths.

Police are investigating the killing of a mother and her 17-year-old daughter during an attack at their home along Seventh Avenue, Malick, Barataria, on Friday afternoon.

Police identified the mother as Rosanna Ramlal, a doubles vendor. Her daughter was a student. According to a police report cited by the Trinidad Express, four masked men dressed in dark clothing entered the house in the afternoon and demanded money from the woman. They then turned on her 20-year-old son, who had been playing video games in the living room, and beat him before shooting both women. The son told police the men poured methylated spirits on the women and set them on fire before escaping through an open back door. He suffered minor injuries to his face, hands and upper body and was taken to hospital.

Fire officers who responded to reports of a house fire extinguished the blaze, which was contained to a bedroom, and then found the women’s remains on a bed. Crime scene investigators recovered three spent 9mm rounds. Fire officials told the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian they could not yet say whether the women were killed before the fire started or whether an accelerant was used. They said they would return to the scene Saturday morning to continue examining the cause and origin of the fire.

Officers of the Region One Homicide Bureau of Investigations are investigating the killings and the assault on the son. Snr. Supt. Claire Guy-Alleyne called the incident tragic and appealed for anyone with information to contact the Morvant Police Station. She said it would be thoroughly investigated. The Guardian reported that a close male relative of the family remained in police custody late Friday, assisting with inquiries. No charges had been reported.
