A man was fatally shot on a subway platform in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, and New York City police are searching for the gunman.
The shooting happened around 12:21 p.m. at the West 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue station, which serves the B, D and E lines. According to the NYPD, an unidentified person approached an unidentified man on the northbound E train platform, displayed a firearm and fired, striking him once in the chest. The gunman fled on foot northbound on Seventh Avenue. The man died at Bellevue Hospital. His name has not been released.
Police said at a news conference they do not believe the killing was a random act. Michael Kemper, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s chief security officer, said the incident appeared to be a dispute between two people that ended tragically. He said no one outside the fight was hurt and that the agency worked with the NYPD from the first minutes to retrieve video from platform and train car cameras. A tourist told reporters her daughter saw the gunman and warned others, and people on the platform huddled together.
Detectives released photos of a person they want to question. Police said he was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, a black vest and a black face mask, and carrying a backpack.
