A Delta Air Lines flight from Barcelona to Boston made an emergency landing in Porto, Portugal, on Sunday after smoke was reported in the cabin, according to Reuters. Flight DL251, an Airbus A330, departed Barcelona at about 3:15 p.m. local time and reported a mechanical issue roughly two and a half hours later. The airline confirmed to Reuters that the aircraft landed at Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.

Eight passengers were treated on the tarmac in Porto, and three others were taken to a hospital, a spokesperson for Portugal’s emergency and civil protection authority told Reuters. The cause of the smoke has not been disclosed, and Delta had not released further details on the passengers’ conditions in the reports reviewed. The aviation news site AIRLIVE, which tracked the flight, reported that the crew declared a general emergency with the 7700 transponder code before landing safely on Runway 35.

Accounts of the initial reason for the diversion differ. AIRLIVE first described it as a medical situation in the cabin, while Reuters and Portuguese officials attributed it to smoke. AIRLIVE also reported that Delta rescheduled the flight’s continuation to Boston for Monday at 1 p.m. local time and canceled two connected flights, DL276 and DL277, though Delta has not detailed those changes in the reports reviewed
