Standfirst: Hayley Matthews scored 182 as West Indies beat Zimbabwe by 99 runs Thursday. Her innings set records.
Hayley Matthews produced a record-breaking 182 as West Indies Women defeated Zimbabwe Women by 99 runs in the first ODI of their three-match series at Harare Sports Club on Thursday. West Indies posted 299-6 from 50 overs before dismissing Zimbabwe for 200 in 43.3 overs.
Matthews, who captains the West Indies side, opened the innings and shared a 128-run first-wicket partnership with Realeanna Grimmond, who made 53 from 70 balls. Matthews reached her century from 108 deliveries and continued attacking through the latter stages before being dismissed for 182 from 156 balls, including 26 fours and two sixes.
The innings became the highest individual score by a West Indies woman in ODI cricket, surpassing Stafanie Taylor’s previous mark of 171. Matthews’ 182 also ranks among the highest individual scores in women’s ODI history and followed her unbeaten 159 against Ireland earlier this year, giving her two scores above 150 in ODIs during 2026.
West Indies finished on 299-6 despite Matthews being dismissed with six balls remaining. Chinelle Henry contributed 19, while Grimmond’s half-century helped provide the platform for Matthews’ extended innings. Zimbabwe’s Francisca Chipare took two wickets for 57 runs.
Zimbabwe’s chase never matched the required scoring rate. Modester Mupachikwa provided the main resistance with 86 from 106 balls, but wickets fell regularly as West Indies’ bowlers restricted the hosts to 200. Aaliyah Alleyne took three wickets for 44 runs, while Ashmini Munisar and Jannillea Glasgow claimed two each.
The victory gives West Indies a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The second match is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, at Harare Sports Club, with the final ODI to follow on Sept. 30.
