Fallen trees as Isaias reap havoc

Hurricane Isaias left at least three people dead and more than 840,000 homes and businesses without power across Florida, Alabama and Georgia after making landfall on Florida’s Panhandle on Friday night, then weakening to a post-tropical cyclone as it pushed inland.

The storm came ashore near Destin as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of about 105 mph (170 kph), the National Hurricane Center said, after briefly peaking as a Category 3 earlier in the day. It is the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season, CBS News reported. Tens of thousands of people had evacuated.

A woman died when a tree fell on a house in Escambia County, Florida, the county sheriff said. ABC News reported at least two deaths confirmed in Florida and at least one in Birmingham, Alabama. The sheriff’s office asked residents to stay off the roads so crews could work to restore power.

PowerOutage.us showed 438,137 customers without power in Florida, 294,662 in Alabama and 111,105 in Georgia on Saturday. Heavy rain and flash flooding spread across the Southeast, and Gulf oil production was slowed ahead of landfall.

The hurricane center had warned of dangerous hurricane-force winds across the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama and southern Mississippi. It advised people who stayed to have a safe room ready and to prepare for long power outages.
