Slinger Francisco, the Grenadian-born, Trinidad-raised performer known worldwide as the Mighty Sparrow, died Sunday in New York at age 91. His family said he passed peacefully following a brief illness, surrounded by loved ones. His daughter, Karen Francisco, confirmed the death in a statement, saying the calypso icon had recently been baptized in the Seventh-day Adventist faith before his passing.

Born on July 9, 1935, in Grand Roy, St. John, Grenada, Francisco moved to Trinidad as a young child and began performing calypso in 1949. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he became one of the genre’s most decorated figures, winning Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso King or Monarch title eight times and the Carnival Road March competition on eight occasions. He was honored with Trinidad and Tobago’s Order of the Republic and Chaconia Medal, as well as the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his contributions to Caribbean culture.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in the history of calypso, Francisco was known for his powerful voice, sharp wit and songs addressing social and political issues across the Caribbean and beyond. His death drew tributes from across the region, including from Trinidadian politician Stuart Young, who credited him with shaping the soundtrack of generations of households. Plans for a public celebration of his life are being organized, and fans have been invited to share tributes on social media. His passing marks the end of one of the longest and most celebrated careers in Caribbean music history.
