Steven Kolb resigned as CFDA CEO following backlash over his confrontation with animal-rights protesters during New York Fashion Week.
Kolb announced his resignation on September 18, ending nearly 20 years at the organization after videos circulated showing him physically restraining protesters during a COS runway show.
The incident took place on September 13 as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) activists disrupted the COS show to protest the use of wool. Reuters reported that Kolb grabbed at least two protesters, with video showing him pinning one to the ground and placing his hand over her mouth. COS is owned by H&M Group.
Kolb apologized the following day, saying there was no justification for physically restraining another person and that security should have handled the situation. The CFDA subsequently placed him on leave while its board conducted a review.
In announcing his departure, Kolb said he had made the decision to step down after 20 years leading the organization. The CFDA said it respected his decision and thanked him for his service. The organization had not announced a successor as of September 19.
