On September 25, 1890, the United States established Sequoia National Park in California, creating the nation’s second national park and protecting some of the world’s largest trees. The park was established by Congress to preserve the giant sequoias of the Sierra Nevada.
The park remains known for its giant sequoia groves, including the General Sherman Tree, one of the largest trees on Earth by volume. Its creation helped establish a broader tradition of protecting distinctive natural landscapes for public enjoyment and conservation.
